Lieutenant Governor, Manufacturers, and Correctional Peace Officers announce California manufacturing summit

May 26, 2011 Sacramento, CA -- Today California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, the California Manufacturers & Technology Association (CMTA), and the California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA) announced the "Everything Grows with Manufacturing" summit, to be held June 29, 2011 at the Sacramento Convention Center.

Summit co-chair, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, will describe his efforts to promote private investment and job growth in California, including his work on a new economic development plan that includes manufacturing as a key component. "We should restart the engine of economic development in California, and signal to all potential job creators that our great state is open for business again," said Newsom.

Also in attendance will be premier economists, employers, labor and other stakeholders to share their vision of what California should strive to become in the next decades.

"California has rested on its natural laurels far too long," said CMTA president, and Summit co-chair Jack Stewart. "We’ve chosen winners and losers, taken our eye off the ball, and been too complacent while other states have created inviting climates to grow every type of manufacturing. We can’t afford to lose the race for new investments in existing and new manufacturing firms. In June we are going to start to turn this around."

"Our correctional officers put themselves at risk everyday," said CCPOA president, and Summit co-chair, Michael Jimenez. "We understand well that California must grow its private sector job base to sustain minimum public sector funding for crucial and often dangerous services. We also know that a job is often the difference between an inmate and a productive citizen. It all starts with making sure our largest wealth creator -- manufacturing -- can flourish and support other industries in California."

The Summit agenda and key panelist details will be revealed over the coming weeks.

The Summit will be broadcast live via webcast.
