The Sept 15th Roundtable was another significant step in getting an understanding of all of the challenges California manufacturers are having in producing and selling non medical PPE to re-open our economy. We also heard some key concerns and needs from buyers in the agricultural space. Thank you to Emily Rooney of the Agricultural Council of California, Matthew Allen of the Western Growers Association, and Michael Miiller of the California Association of Wine Grape Growers for their time in outlining their sector’s PPE needs.
Thank you to Laura Wilkinson with 86 Foundation, Todd Dickson with Lumenous, Jason McMillen with LICAP, Karsten Newbury with Gerber Technology, Ranvir Gujral with Adaptive Energy, Joe Wilson with the C19 Coaliton, and Shirish Pareek with AMG Partners for their tremendous contributions to this Roundtable and to the overall PPE dynamics in California. We also hope manufacturers who are seeking to pivot their fabrication capabilites had some questions answered from some of our manufacturers who have been successful.
We were pleased to have more than 17 legislative staff (offices listed below), the office of Emergency Services, and other related government staff attend to get an unfiltered look at challenges and potential solutions.
The SafelyMakingCA.org website continues to evolve. We have had 60k unique hits since the launch, more than 21k users of the site with repeated use, and we continue to get through a vetting process to ensure only California manufacturers are listed. CMTA’s Teresa Kent, and Intel’s Andrea Kail and Paul Xiong (on loan to CMTA for six months) are, among many project efforts, working toward the next iteration of the website with improved user interface, the ability to record and track sales within the site, and other improvements.
We have included a link below to watch the webinar again but the key recommendations from our manufacturers of PPE were as follows:
- Waive state portion of sales tax on PPE, both made and sold in California
- Establish private and public Purchasing Pool / Advance commitments to guarantee demand
- Provide Guidelines for specific PPE needs by sectors and sub sectors
- Create California Certifications for particular PPE
We are asking you as key participants to rank those recommendations and answer other questions to help us move forward in the linked survey below. Please respond by Wednesday September 23. CMTA will be creating an official recommendation document to send to Governor Newsom’s Administration, specifically the Office of Emergency Services and the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). We are also providing regular reports to them on the difficulties (and successes) we have seen since the project’s launch.
