July 2, 2010 President Obama met with a bipartisan group of Senators on June 29 to chart a path forward on a comprehensive energy and climate change bill. The President urged passage of a bill that would put a price on carbon emissions, but the details of the measure remain unclear. Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) have offered to scale back their cap-and-trade proposal in an effort to gain Republican support. Senator Bingaman (D-NM), chair of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, is working on a bill that would place a carbon cap solely on the utility sector and likely would prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from regulating greenhouse gas emissions from stationary sources. Senator Bingaman still is unsure whether he will formally introduce the proposal following the July 4 recess. Contact: Phone or e-mail: ![]() www.nam.org |
